Why sure, don't you remember the Feud of 1776 that started when a Federalist screamed out that rallying war cry: "A-a-a-l-VIN!"

The chipmunks aren't all out in the sticks. I lived in Alexandria just south of the beltway and had a lot of the little guys, and I'm now in Springfield and there are several that live out behind my shed. So they seem to be all over from what I've seen.

I see them scurrying around the school bus yard on West Ox Rd in Fairfax.

The little guys are always running...I imagine they have to, lest they become a tasty morsel for hawks or just about any predator.

CAVA1990, if your neighbors have cats that are allowed to roam, that could account for the absence of chipmunks. Cats like to hunt them and smart chipmunks know how to hide from them.

Good point. We have lots of potential chipmunk predators - foxes, owls, hawks, and cats as you suggest. We do have a lot of roaming felines - my dogs are constantly complaining about it.

In Chantilly I relocated(have-a-heart traps) around a dozen in both Spring/Fall, same for my in-laws in Springfield. One of our neighbors feeds them... so they just keep coming. I think they're cute, but they can damage retaining walls and sink front porches. Look for some holes around your front porch they're pretty good about hiding them with leaves and stuff, you probably have some We get the red one's with the white/black stripes.
