Virginia has way more stringent traffic safety laws than Maryland, so I think it has an impact on how loose people drive.

My friend has theory that Maryland (esp. MoCo.) has more transplants from NJ/NY where they drive more aggressively, where NoVa has more people from the South and Midwest where aggressive driving isn't as prevalent.

So true, and then add in football games and I guess I will leave my corner of the world more than I planned. LOL

Bingo. This is most definitely true. It's the one thing I miss about MD - my roomie and I could all be sort of loud and eccentric in public, and all the ex-Jerseyites (etc.) around us didn't care. Sometimes they'd even join in our conversations!

Check out the MD forums. I've read posts that state MD has better schools/safer/ nicer/ better drivers than VA . I know more renters in MD more homeowners in VA th'-all are families. There seems to be a lot of love for Bethesda and especially Rockville. I do hear that the Metro Red line has lots more problems with starts/stops-on and off loads than the Orange ( and the Orange definitely has problems with that) and that can add time and frustration on a commuter.

I suppose both states have their supporters on here. The only way I would live there is if it is going cut his commute considerably.

What I've seen are state surveys that indicate that, overall, Maryland has better schools than Virginia, but what would be relevant to you is how the schools in the DC suburbs of Maryland and Virginia match up. My own take is that there are many very solid schools in both jurisdictions, but there are more solid schools in Virginia (Arlington/Fairfax/Loudoun) than in Maryland, so you have more choices in Virginia than Maryland if good schools are important to you.

I will echo what other posters have said, however, which is that the Ronald Reagan building (13th and Pennsylvania) is pretty centrally located in DC, so the commute could be about the same from either DC or VA. As you probably know already, if he's working there, it's equally convenient to both the Blue/Orange (Federal Triangle/Metro Center) and Red (Metro Center) subway lines.

When I moved from Maryland to Virginia, I got a substantial "pay raise" due to the state tax being taken out of my check being MUCH lower for Virginia. Way more than offset the personal property tax.

I think I will live in NOVA, I posted on the Maryland board about the differences and had 3 replies. At least on here I had 3 pages of replies.
