The problem is, the economy stinks right now.
Friday night I went to Fair Oaks area -- I lived there in 2002- 2003 and at the time it was the up and coming place to be. Well, my favorite Mexican restaraunt, Tia's, is closed and vacant. Next door, there is a huge vacant area where either a Staples or Office Max used to be. This isn't just a problem inside the beltway, folks. Businesses are shutting down everywhere. In DC, Scan furniture just went out of business after decades of success.
Tyson's, however, seems to be thriving. I live across the route 7 entrance and on the weekend, the traffic is just horrible.

I recently talked to a few of the store owners in the mall and several have just renewed their lease. Definitely not being torn down! It's going to be rebuilt in stages, more restaurants and stores, outside space with cafés, new parking. And apparently the corner of the lot that currently has the Men's Wearhouse will have a Wholefoods sometime in the future.

No
Given the number of shootings, armed robberies, assaults, attempted rapes, car jackings and muggings that have taken place here in the last 5 years- NO!
I used to shop at Springfield Mall when I lived in the area but that changed when my pregnant wife was pushed aside on an escalator by a guy waving a gun and running from the cops. After not seeing ANYTHING written about this incident and never hearing anything from the mall after numerous inquiries, I decided to take my money somewhere safer.
As for the references to Mexicans and other minorities- I actually never had a problem with any minorities there except for one incident with two black punks who were just trying to be cool. All of my other "run-ins" were with snot nosed white boys trying to out cool each other. The Mexicans that I encountered at the mall were friendly, polite, and MUCH more pleasant to be around than my fellow Caucasians.

wow,
it was the place to go back in the late 70s. Just another reason i am glad i am not up in Norhtern Va any more. My wife and I used to eat at Farrells and I remember seeing Jaws and Star Wars at the theatre there. And yes i was one of those drinking in the parking lot!!!

Springfield Mall
I agree that the racist and bigoted comments are shocking! This "clash of cultures" is happening everywhere in the U.S., not just in Springfield NoVa.

I have heard that about a possible Wholefoods coming to that area as well and think that is great news! I hope it happens!

Scan has declared bankruptcy, but they have not yet closed all the stores. I would be nervous about ordering furniture through them though--getting something off the floor would be more secure.

I stopped by Scan on Nokes Road today. They will remain open until March, then closing their doors. They are running a 30% sale. I feel sad for them, but even at 30% the prices are still much higher than I would pay for that level of furniture. They had a row of ergonomic recliners--the least expensive one was $2300.
