My wife and I have been looking at housing in the Bristow area and found a nice little home in the Braemar subdivision that seems like it would suit us nicely. I work in DC (currently commuting by Loudoun County bus from Ashburn where we're renting). My commute is about an hour each way now, so traveling by train from the Bristow VRE stop would not take much more time than what I'm currently taking. I like being able to read on the commute. (It would also be cheaper after factoring in my commuting subsidy.)

I'm hoping someone can answer a few questions I have about the area:

1) How is the parking at the Bristow VRE stop? I saw on the VRE website that the lot is running at 116% capacity right now. If that's the case, when do you need to get there to get a spot? Can you park on the road (Piper Road) running into the station if all the parking spaces are taken?

2) Is the Braemar neighborhood safe? We've at looked the schools in the area. They seem very good. But I can't find much about crime in the area.

3) How crowded does the train get coming from DC in the afternoons? Does it make more sense to board at Union Station or can you get on at L'Enfant and still get a seat?

4) Are there other public commuting options from Bristow that I'm not considering?

Anyone who has other observations to make about Bristow and Braemar feel free to pass them on. I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We live in Bristow, although not in Braemar, and my husband VREs into DC on the days when it works with his schedule. He goes as far as the L'Enfant station.

Mr. Husband reports that you have to get to the VRE lot pretty early to get a parking space; however, you can park along both Piper Lane and the little road that runs from Piper Lane to the VRE lot.

2) Is the Braemar neighborhood safe? We've at looked the schools in the area. They seem very good. But I can't find much about crime in the area.

Like I said, we don't live in Braemar, but I'd be very surprised to find that Braemar has crime issues. We don't, and we're just up the road. I think Braemar would be as safe as anything else out here, and we feel quite safe.

3) How crowded does the train get coming from DC in the afternoons? Does it make more sense to board at Union Station or can you get on at L'Enfant and still get a seat?

Mr. Husband reports that he never has problems getting a seat on the train either going in in the mornings or coming out in the afternoons. He is usually on an earlier train in the afternoons, though, so I'm not sure what the late afternoon commute is like.

ETA: After reading my response over my shoulder, Mr. Husband adds that there are always seats even in the late afternoon if you're boarding at Union Station or L'Enfant. He says it doesn't get crowded until you get to Alexandria.

4) Are there other public commuting options from Bristow that I'm not considering?

I'll bet there are, but we don't know of them.

The only think I can think to add is that Braemar has crazy high HOA fees, but you probably already know that. Those fees do include your cable/internet access, though, so it may not work out to be that high after all when you take that into account.

Good luck with your decision!

Hi there, I read your post and I am thinking of moving to Bristow. I am a 32 young executive and was wondering if you still like Bristow or if you did not and you moved away.

I am looking for a decent area that's not too ghetto filled with either old folk or other upper class young executives.
Please help me.

I take the the 7:50 AM train ( the last one), and I still get parking. I either park at the farthest lot from the station or the road leading to the station from the piper road.

In the evening I take the train from Alexandria, and I have to wait for a station or 2 to get a seat. I guess you shouldn't have that problem if you board at Union or L'efant station.

Yup, we still live here and like it quite a lot. We're a family, though. Are you single or married/married with a family?

If I were still single, I'm not sure I'd like it as much out here. The entire Bristow/Gainesville area is very family-oriented. There's not a lot to do out here for singles, as far as I'm aware. If I were single and your age, I'd probably prefer Reston.

Do Bristow and ghetto even belong in the same sentence?
