My husband and I are thinking of taking a few cooking classes this year. We think it could be a fun thing to do as a date, so we don't want advanced classes. Something fun, like How To Make Perfect BBQ Sauce or How to Make Holiday Desserts, that sort of thing. We also want to explore the area a little bit more, so we're open to trying anything within a 20-mile radius of Cascades.

Any suggestions?

I've heard good things about Cookology, at Dulles Town Center.

Apparently, Friday night is Date Night (http://www.ssreg.com/cookology/classes/classes.asp?catID=1912&pcatID=1817 - broken link).

I just got the Merrifield Garden Center schedule for seminars, and a few of them are on cooking. They have one this month on cooking stews.

I have no idea how hands on these classes are. The only seminars I've been to have been to are lectures--but I go to gardening classes, not cooking classes. Anyway, it might be fun to check it out.

Open Kitchen in Falls Church (it's on the West side of Falls Church City, not far from the Metro station) has tons of classes.

I am not sure where the Cascades is so don't know if this is in the radius you are looking for but my dh took a "knife" class at Sur La Table in Pentagon City and he enjoyed it so much we are looking at the cooking classes now.

Never been, but a few family friends recommended checking this place out since my Wife and I like to cook:
Let's Dish
Let's Dish! - The healthy, fun, fast way to provide great meals for the whole family!
They've got a couple of locations in the northern va area.

Outside of that, my mother has taken a number of classes at Williams Sonoma that she enjoyed, and you usually get a discount after the class for items purchased that night.

Fairfax County schools have adult education classes that should include what you're looking for and would probably be super cheap to take. Go to their website and you'lll probably find an on-line catalog.

I've walked pass a Dinner Ideas - Healthy Meals - Meal Planning - Meal Preparation - Dream Dinners place near my house and it looks interesting enough. It would probably be a cool date thing to do.

L'Academie de Cuisine (http://www.lacademie.com/Recreation/RecreationalHome.aspx?Destination=welcome - broken link)
It's at the edge of your radius, but don't be afraid to cross the river.
