Wow, nice photos! I used the Potomac for one of my recent photo contests, and it can be a truly amazing place (It is one river which I'll never swim in though). I took some photographs last January (2009) from up upon a hill overlooking the Potomac down near D.C. (Along the GW Parkway). The ENTIRE river, even the tidal portion, was one giant block of ice. It was 9 Deg. F. with the Sun out, and I loved it (9 Deg. F. is downright freezing at night, but it's fine with the Sun out-and-about).

I normally use Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA as my river spot (I walked it a couple of times all the way to the Falls).

That's one of my favorite walks.

The next time you go, look for a little rock stone buried along the pathway between Riverbend Park and Great Falls National Park. It's a little bit north of the spillway. It's very old, looks like it might be a grave marker (except that it's a bit too small for that).

It's a plain stone, but carefully carved onto it is "W.A.E. XXII" I've been trying to figure out for years what this thing is... would love your opinion!

Hey, that's an interesting find right there! I've spent quite a bit of time in the park as a scout when I was younger too (For projects, and Orienteering). I'll definitely go out there and look for the marker which you mention. I'll take some photographs of it as well
