I'm looking for bricks-and-mortal local sources for upscale lighting fixtures, hardware fittings, and (eventually) plumbing. Independent ownership and proximity to Vienna are pluses. Any advice? My builder-grade house and I would be very grateful.

Dulles Electric in Sterling has a huge selection of lighting. They usually have sales around this time of year, too. It's on Sterling Bvd. just a few blocks from where it intersects with Rt. 28.

There's a nice place in Reston and Leesburg -- Home Specialities (or something like that). They have beautiful stuff. The Reston one is in with Harris-Teeter and the Leesburg is on Market Street (Rt 7) near the County/City government buildings. Lighting, hardware, decorative, all kinds of stuff. They're not the greatest with customer service but they have a large selection.

Illuminations (Georgetown or in The Lansburgh Downtown) is a great resource for designer lighting fixtures. They're more transitional to contemporary, though, as opposed to something traditional. Illuminations, Inc.

Another good resource for finishings, plumbing materials, etc. is Weaver's Hardware in Georgetown. Weaver's Hardware

Lamps Unlimited in McLean might also be worth a look, since they seem to have a decent selection, and are independently owned. Lamps Unlimited - Mclean, VA

I would also check Union Hardware in Bethesda and Falls Church for plumbing fixtures. They, too, are independent, and have been in business nearly 100 years. Union Hardware

You know what I'd like to find is a place where bits and pieces of buildings have been salvaged. Grand old mantelpieces, columns, door knockers, etc.

I, too, would be curious about this. I may never be able to afford a home here in NoVA, but I would still like to turn an otherwise drab 1970s-era apartment into a slight vestige of Victorian-era life.

The Brass Knob (D.C.)
Architectural Old House Parts (Front Royal)

There are a few in Baltimore, too.

I've been to the store in Front Royal. It's a tantalizing store to browse through, even if you aren't in the market for old architectural pieces. One of the more interesting places to go if you're visiting Front Royal, IMO.
