I am moving to northern virginia to take a job @ quantico. I am moving from alabama were we have public magnet schools. My son will turn 5 this year and will be ready for school, he is currently in a pre-k program. Just wanted to here some thoughts on the public schools in Stafford Co. or Prince William Co. or should I be looking at private schools? Thanks.

I don't know anything about the schools in Stafford or Prince William. Fairfax schools are excellent!

I have kids in elementary, middle, and high school. We've moved all over the country throughout their lives. In this area, they've been in Montgomery County (Maryland) schools and Fairfax County (Virginia) schools. I have no complaints about Fairfax. My high school kids are at Lake Braddock. We've been more than happy with the school.

It depends on the individual school(s) you are considering. Where in Fairfax County (Stafford County/Prince William County) do you want to live? I suggest identifying some possible housing locations first (to think about your commute) and then consider schools in those areas as a matter of comparison.

Fairfax County schools are nationally regarded. So in comparison, other well-performing school districts in the area tend to pale in its limelight, so to speak.

On the other hand, a convenient commute is an advantage not to be disregarded around here. Without knowing any specifics about Prince William or Stafford schools, I would suggest looking at compatible communities as close to Quantico as possible. By area standards, housing in Stafford and PW is much more affordable than in Fairfax. A reverse commute down from Fairfax County via I-95 is a bit of a gamble as well.

I moved to VA in NOV 2009, not too long a go. We moved from NY and chose Fairfax County's Cherry Run ES in Burke. It is an excellent school.

Fairfax county also has public magnet school which my son can apply for.
Even in the Cherry Run they have gifted and talented classes which are great for my son.

I hope this will help...
