Hi all,

I'm moving to NoVa for a job. My girlfriend is coming with me, but she hasn't found a job yet. I'm going to have to find an apartment to live before she will have found a job, so I'd like to live in a place that gives her some reasonable options in terms of areas to look for jobs.

My job will be in Fairfax, close to I-495 and I-66.

I was thinking about getting an apartment around there close to the Vienna Metro station. I assume this will allow her to commute into the city fairly easily on the metro. Is this correct?
From here, how reasonable is it that she could commute to possible jobs in:
Reston,
Bethesda,
Takoma Park,
Arlington,
Alexandria?

She would be willing to take the metro or drive.

Thanks for your help! Also, if you know of better areas to live, please advise!
Remember, my job is in Fairfax, but she hasn't found one yet. So we have to keep that in mind.

Thanks!

495 and 66 intersect just east of the Dunn Loring Metro station. Might want to save a few cents and a few minutes on any commute by checking out that area also.

Yes, it is. Train-time from Vienna to Metro Center in the middle of downtown DC is 29 minutes. From Dunn Loring, it's 26 minutes. Doesn't count getting to/from the train at either end, of course.

The whole arc comprised of McLean, Falls Church, Dunn Loring, Vienna, Oakton, Fairfax, and Burke is very nice. Those aren't the only nice areas around, but they'll be tough to beat. Drawbacks are that they are expensive and traffic at rush hour is abysmal. Everyone who can, tries to use mass transit, whether it be Metro or Virginia Railway Express...
