Just received this email from VRE Train Talk.

It is going to be really interesting...

No Parking on Piper Lane

Some have noticed the dangerous conditions on Piper Lane due to the cars parking there. As a result, Prince William County will post “No Parking” signs on the road later this week or early next week. No cars on Piper Lane will open up the sight distance, or the length of roadway visible to the driver, making for safer travelling conditions on the road and will prevent cars from blocking the travel way.

We understand that this will add to the parking frustration at Broad Run, but it must be done in the interest of safety. Prince William County has an interest in building a parking deck at the station and has agreed to pay for an environmental analysis and preliminary engineering study which should start later this year. Assuming that we can also secure funding for design and construction in a timely fashion, the opening of a deck will not be for at least four years.

In the interim, we are looking at short term solutions with Prince William County that include adding spaces or starting a new shuttle service. Both of these options are not guaranteed, but we are pursuing the possibilities. More feasible options are parking at alternate stations; Manassas only used 73% of its available parking in December and for those who live in-between the Manassas and Fredericksburg Lines, Woodbridge only used 60% of parking in the same month. Another alternative is to start a carpool with other riders who share the same schedule. For those riders on Facebook, feel free to list any carpool information in the Discussions section. We know that these are not the best answers but we appreciate your patience while we work for a deck at Broad Run.

While it is too bad that people will have less places to park - they do have a point about Piper Lane not really being the safest place to park or about cars parking there blocking views down the road to see where people are turning, etc.

It is a sign of VRE's success too - that the lot is now filling up rapidly. Years ago there wasn't this problem at the Broad Run station.

One thing VRE riders of this lot need to do is start calling your board member if you live in the county. Otherwise your state senator or delegate and help push for this deck. I don't use the lot but I do know Piper Lane is a terrible place to park and they will enforce the No Parking.
