We'll be moving back to the DC area in July. Any thoughts on best areas/commute times when trying to get to Ft. McNair on a daily basis? We'll need to live in an area with good schools since we have one school aged child.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

eta... we'll be searching for a nice rental home (probably not a townhome).. not going to buy this time around.

I noticed quite a few rental homes in Arlington off of Columbia Pike/S George Mason Dr. From there it would be 15-30 min depending on traffic & time of day. There are nicer neighborhoods in N. Arlington & East Falls Church, but the commute might be 10 min longer. You might also find a nice SFH in West Alexandria, (west of Del Ray or west of old town) from there it would be 20-40 min.

Talking Military?

Hey, if you're in the military I'd highly recommend looking at the website ahrn.com. It's for military and lists houses for rent and sale across the US. Last year I rented my home to a military couple (actually, I would only rent to a military couple). The neat thing about the site is that they normally provide distance to military facilities. For school districts, I really only know about VA -- Fairfax County is excellent. But there are websites that rate school districts. As far as commute...uck. You'll probably need to drive (metro doesn't get close enough to be safe) but perhaps you could pick up a carpool. Good luck!!

Will you be attending ICAF or NDU? My husband is going to school there this year and we live in West Springfield. He carpools with other students and their commute is only about 30 minutes on the 395 HOV lanes. You can also take the Metro to L'Enfant Plaza and then ride the free Coast Guard shuttle onto Ft. McNair but that'll take longer than just carpooling.
