Hello, I have a job opportunity in Herndon. I am single and want to live closer to a vibrant urban scene. I figure that living in one of NOVA's metro accessible towns might be an option. So, I am trying to come up wiht a reasonable commute 25 mins, maybe 30. Can folks recommend which one of the towns/ metro stops in NOVA is the most happening, things to do, bars, restaurants, etc.

If these are out of commute range, could some offer any other suggestions? Thank you, J

While Herndon has bus routes that connect to the Metro, there is currently no train station there.

The Clarendon/Ballston corridor of Arlington is the 20something mecca of NOVA. For 30somethings and up or those who prefer something a bit more laid-back, Old Town Alexandria is an option as well. All of these areas have Metro stops but would require longer than a half-hour commute to Herndon (~ 45-60 minutes).

A decent alternative might be Reston, specifically near the Town Center. As the town borders Herndon, your commute would be relatively short.

Shirlington is a great place for singles. There's lots of babes, bars, and restaurants, etc. But Tone509 is right when he says that Clarendon is THE hot spot for people in their 20's. And he's also right about Old Town being a great place. I love it in old town, but I am well into my 30's. If you work regular day shift hours then you should not have a bad commute from Arlington or Alexandria.
