If you work in DC but live in NoVa, do you have to pay DC income tax or just Virginia?

When we lived in MD and my husband worked in DC, we paid only MD tax. Which was plenty!

tax follows your residence, which is usually the address on your paycheck

In your situation, you would just pay VA as long as you work as a W-2 employee.

Your employer is required to withhold state taxes based on where you WORK, not live, unless that state has a reciprocal agreement. DC is unique in that any non residents working in DC can claim an exemption from DC withholding. In this area there are reciprocal agreements between MD/VA/WV/PA. PA even has a reciprocal agreement w/ Indiana. If you worked in CA and lived Nevada for instance, your employer would have to withhold CA.

Clair is correct however...come April 15th time, you are going to owe the State of Virginia money. Its usually pretty small, but I wouldn't just disregard it.
