Ski conditions in the mid-Atlantic that early can be problematical depending on the weather. We don't need natural snow, but we do need cold temps for snowmaking. Normally, I'd say there would be some skiing available because average winters would allow for that, and ski areas will do everything possible to make snow then--it's their money-making part of the season. It also depends on what level of skiers you are. If you have very good skiers the risk of disappointment increases, because the easier slopes build a base quicker. If you have young kids who do not need a challenge, then you should be fine. Massanutten also has a tubing hill, and there is a great indoor tropical beach-like pool complex on the resort entrance road. I assume you want something drivable from NoVA, so I suggest that you consider Snowshoe, WV, also. More slopes, greater vertical, higher elevation, more snow, and more to do. The snow and cold come a little earlier there.
