(Sigh). I tried doing some work from home today with my laptop, but I realized I forgot to bring my LAN network cable home with me from McLean so I can't access most of what I need to in order to actually do anything. I did what I could.

My worry is that I need to release my timesheet tomorrow. If we are closed again tomorrow (which looks likely) I hope my building in Herndon will at least be open so I can hook into the network, fill that out and release it, and also get caught up on work. If not, then looks like no paycheck for me!

I'm thinking definitely open on Friday with liberal leave, but tomorrow I'd peg closure now at 75% and at least liberal leave at 100%. The snow may be stopping in a few hours in NoVA, but it will be lasting through the evening in Maryland's suburbs to the north and east of the District. I'm so bummed I forgot my LAN network cable! I didn't think as of Friday that I'd be snowed in all week like this.

You should keep one in your laptop bag. I've got at least a dozen here...

What about unhooking your home PC and using that cable? Check with neighbors as someone must have one you could at least borrow for a few hours.

Any local WiFi you could get to? Panera? StarBucks?

As a fed in Maryland I find it deplorable that you aren't at work now. I hear Va. only has a few inches of snow.

D.C. closes at the drop of a hat. Feds elsewhere still work.

You'll get your paycheck. Rest on that one.

Normally I do keep one in my laptop bag, but I had taken it out to use at the office and forgot to slip it back in apparently when I left with the early dismissal on Friday. I hadn't thought about using my PC's LAN connection (I'm not as technologically-literate as most my age---I'm lucky I can navigate Facebook). Thanks for the tip! There's not much "urgent" work that I essentially NEED to accomplish now vs. tomorrow and/or Friday, but if people from other parts of the country had e-mailed me with requests, questions, etc. on Monday it's best I get back to them ASAP.

Define "a few." We're closing in on a foot now in many areas, and many streets in Reston in particular weren't even plowed yet from the last storm because VDOT is stretched far too thin due to poor long-range planning. My hope is that they'll raise our taxes this year to provide more funding to VDOT so instead of "rolling the dice" again next winter with a bare bones budget, abysmal services, and fingers crossed for no snow only to get whammied AGAIN for a week we'll be better prepared.

Also, I've maintained that I personally could have walked a mile to an alternative work site and will probably do so tomorrow if we're closed again, keeping my fingers crossed that the building is actually unlocked. A friend of mine who had a deadline to meet this week HAS been working as usual from home, even though others I know are just wasting the entirety of their days saying "why would you guys want to work when we're closed?" Coming to the Federal government from a sales background I knew not to keep clients waiting whenever possible. It's not safe for me NOW to walk over to that work site as the snow comes down and the streets remain hazardous as I'm not looking to be playing mouse with potentially sliding cars as I walk in the roads. However, tomorrow I'm giving it a shot.

The problem? I'm in the minority who COULD walk to work right now. Most of my colleagues live in very far-flung areas because their Federal salaries don't permit them to live closer in. (Northern Virginia's rental prices are generally more expensive than they are in Maryland). In my immediate office in McLean I'm the closest in Reston. Others commute from Alexandria, Ashburn, Manassas, Sterling, and a few in my alternate office commute in from Harper's Ferry and Round Hill.

You have VDOT, and, more specifically, our state elected officials who UNDERFUNDED VDOT to blame for the Feds being potentially closed a full week; it does no good to cave into the trap on the Federal Eye and Washington Post and blame we Federal workers like we wanted to be stranded like this.

I'll bet they'll re-open tomorrow, but allow people to take liberal leave. It doesn't sound like too many trees went down, and the plows will get many roads cleared tonight.

Sorry folks, but break's over. Time to get back to work.

I'll be more than happy to get back to work, but there is still the matter of winds tonight which could still knock trees down and getting mass transit back up and running (If DASH isn't working I aint driving). I'll be happy to get out of the Landmark area for the first time in nearly a week but I'm not holding my breath for tomorrow.
