If we have more snowstorms and winters last the last two weeks then I'd bring the long underwear. It's great when shoveling and I have done well wearing that and only a cotton-line thick hoodie (like what hunters wear), sweats.etc. Also, do you ski? My ski clothes are some of the best things for storm-gear--lightweight but warm with lots of mobility. Otherwise, a good pair of snowboots, wool or wool-blend socks, hats, scarves, and 2 or 3 pairs of gloves.

Down jacket if that's what you prefer but layers and a good wool coat will be fine. Also, there's been a recent backlash against down garments may not be popular around ecological-environmental (and down-conscious) citizens.

What are rain pants?

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll take this info with me while shopping. So, I won't look insane if I walk around with a down jacket on? And my toddler will be fine with a long sleeve top and a fleece layered on top?

I never knew about rain pants until I looked online..they're basically snow pants but not as thick and no inner ankle cuffs. You can pretty much take a shower in them and the water'll roll right off. They're pretty roomy too, so I imagine I'd put them over my toddler's regular pants.

LOL, I'm from Manhattan Beach, and so (like all good surfers) I have a wet suit as well as skins. I wear the skins for snow shovelling and they work great! I can stay out for hours, with no problems from cold or wet snow at all. If you're a surfer or diver and happen to have those, they work just as well (if not better) than long underwear or snow pants. I really don't think you need a different wardrobe to live here, with the exception that you should get a winter coat, hat, and scarf if you don't have one. I don't even own a pair of boots and I'm just fine in the snow with my Reeboks.
