The anchor stores wil stay, but the interior of the mall is going to be torn down and replaced with denser development- offices, residences, and outdoor-facing retail.

As for the school idea, not a bad idea for a smaller strip center, but I think Landmark Mall is just too big and too close to highways, transit, and existing development to use as a school. It makes sense to get a lot of density in there, and try to integrate it into the fabric of the Landmark neighborhood.

If the mall building stayed, it would be harder to get that neighborhood feel that Alexandria desperately needs in that location.

Nah. There's already a stocked fishing hole 3 miles away from Landmark:

Cameron Run - Fishing

Landmark/Van Dorn Area | Planning & Zoning | City of Alexandria, VA

Is this still the plan? I noticed the site has not been updated since September of last year.

That description/picture makes me think of the Hoffman town center next to the Eisenhower Metro.

I don't know that there is any "new" plan - Sears and Macy's will stay as they own the properties they are in. I think it's still up in the air until the owner company emerges from bankruptcy.

I really hope the City of Alexandria does something with the Van Dorn corridor. I think the area has alot of potential.

I agree, and that mall has such potential w/the location, it really is pretty sad now.
