Default Dog - when to start flea/tick control?

I'm quite hopeful that spring is on its way! Since this will be our first spring in NOVA, I'm wondering how soon one should start flea/tick control on our dogs?

YEAR ROUND! Especially if you ever take your dog hiking, or let it off leash at a park or area with brush/piles of leaves. My dog is the long haired fluffy type, and she will come home with ticks year round when we go hiking or to the park. (I think she's a magnet for them). Because of the long fur, it sometimes takes a few days before we find them (we rub her down every night to search--last year she had over a dozen ticks! ) If you have a short haired dog like a hound or a pit and you only walk it on sidewalks, you're probably okay skipping the winter, but for $10/month or whatever it costs, it's peace of mind to me to keep my dog on it all year.

One vet told me that "flea season" in NOVA is March-Dec. Another said do it year-round. Have been doing the latter lately, but there were years when I skipped Jan and Feb with no problems.

We use Frontline Plus every six weeks. I buy the kits on Ebay to save $$$.

Just as another cost-saving option - Costco also sells Flea/tick preventatives at a good price. They have a lot of pet supplies that you'd never think of getting through them.

Welcome to NOVA!
Come out to Middleburg (down 66), where every shop has a basket of milkbones and a waterbowl at the door!
