We are first time home buyers and we are looking to buy a place in Northern VA (Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, etc). Since it is our first time buying a house, we need recommendations on real estate agents in the area. Can anyone recommend an agent? Ideally, the person will be honest with us about comparable prices, house conditions and will be willing to advocate on our behalf.

Thanks a lot in advance.

The Wilkes family... A father and 2 sons. Joshua Wilkes is one of the sons. They are with ReMax in Springfield, VA (703) 658-4719. They really went out of their way to help us.

I highly recommend Terry Brownfield with Long and Foster's Alexandria office. She helped us buy two homes and sell one. She's great with first time home buyers because she points out a lot of great things to look for and/or be aware of that you might not think of yourself. She is very honest about market conditions and what is and is not a good deal. She can help a lot with making sense of home inspections and is a great negotiator. We really felt like she was working for us, not just for the money.

I am bias since I am a Nova Realtor so I will avoid recommending myself... Therefore, I would recommend Diane Peterson. She knows the interior of the belway very well, is aware of great first time buying programs, and can assist you in getting a great deal. Here phone number is... 703.258.9439 Moderator Cut

I do not work in your area but I will give you advice on finding a good buyers agent: Look for one who has the ABR designation, they have taken a course and passed an exam for that designation. They also understand agency and what it means to represent and negotiate for a buyer. They also understand the pitfalls when an agent represents both the buyer and seller in the same transaction. Find a brokerage located in your area of interest, speak with the broker in charge, and ask them for a recommendation. Meet with the agent to see if your personalities mesh and follow your gut instinct, don't be intimidated by a "top producer". You should feel comfortable with your agent. Don't be afraid to ask questions, buying a home is a big deal.

Good luck and have fun!

My office has done a lot of transactions where Barbara Murray of Re/Max Allegiance has been involved. She's always taken care of the details, knows the numbers, knows who to call behind the scenes to get things done. She's got a lot of experience all through the Northern Virginia area and is pleasant to work with on top of all that. 703 824 4800.
