My 2 year old loves a quick walk through the zoo where we currently live. We have a family membership that allows us unlimited entry to our local zoo as well as lots of other zoos in the state, and even some in other states. I was curious if there was a network of childrens zoo in NOVA, and what the closest ones were to the Burke/ West Springfield area. Also, is there a "national zoo" or some type of main zoo for the entire area, that would make for a bigger day trip?

The only one I can think of is the Reston Zoo, which is not really near Burke/W. Springfield though:

Reston Zoo: A wild animal park in the heart of Fairfax County

The National Zoo is the major DC zoo, run by the Smithsonian Institution. It is a free zoo in NW DC between Connecticut Ave. and Rock Creek Park. It's probably about as close to Burke/W. Springfield as the Reston Zoo (depending on where in that Burke/Springfield area you are):

Reston Zoo re-opens for the season on March 14th.

Some other options:

Leesburg Animal Park
Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon
Temple Hall Farm Park in Leesburg
Old Mine Ranch in Dumfries
Luray Zoo
Catoctin Wildlife Preserve near Frederick, MD
Clark's Elioak Farm in Ellicott City, MD

BorninDC is correct as far as zoos go. Frying Pan Park is very popular with young kids and free. You have the farm animals, hay ride and playground.

One place that is very close to your location which my little girl loves is Hidden Pond Nature Center: Hidden Pond Nature Center. It's small, but the kids love looking at the pond creatures, walking around the pond, and playground. Hidden Oaks Nature Center is also close-by. Burke Lake Park is also very close to your location and a lot of fun for children.

We went to Hidden Pond Nature Center today for the first time. I headed down towards the athletic fields by accident. Upon turning around we saw a family of 5 deer just off the path searching for food. My 5yo LOVED it. The Nature Center is good, great to burn off some steam for 45 minutes or so on a cold or rainy day. It will be a GREAT place to visit when the weather gets a tad warmer. Lots of places to walk, sit and explore which is a must with my 16 mo.

We love going to the zoo, even for just an hour or two. I've been to Frying Pan Park a number of times and it's really not that far from Springfield.
