Can anyone recommend a good place for "affordable" tires? I know tires aren't the cheapest thing but the place I went to a "chain" today where I get my oil changed and almost made me dropped dead. 4 tires and all the installation for 678.00. I have a Volvo SUV so I know the tires won't be cheap but DARN thats alot of money.

Can anyone recommend a local dealer not affiliated with a chain maybe?

And of course the man told me that I would need them before inspection and OF COURSE my inspection is next month.

Have you heard of tirerack.com? You can buy the tires online and have them shipped to your house. You then take the tires to have them install at a local tire store.

I've gotten the best deals through Costco or BJs. They have very good service too. I always try NTB first but Costco/BJs always beats them. I think they have a coupon going right now for $70 off Bridgestone tires. They also routinely have discounts on Michelin tires.

Another vote for Tirerack. I have bought 3-4 sets from them. The last set arrived 2 days after ordering. Their selection and price are better than Costco. Great reviews from other drivers to help you making your selection. Get the best you can afford. Tires are important.

Is it still, overall, cheaper if you have to pay an installation fee somewhere else?

It was for me. I ordered from Tirerack.com and had them shipped straight to the mechanic, who let me know when they arrived and installed them. My mechanic was actually the one who suggested it. He told me that he could order and provide the tire for X amount of money, plus Y to mount/balance, etc., or that I could check out tirerack, have them shipped to him, and he would only charge the same Y amount to mount/balance. It helps that I have a good, honest mechanic here in Woodbridge who isn't out to gouge anyone.

Well, if you wouldn't mind passing on his contact info, I'd appreciate it as I'm in Woodbridge.

Discounttiredirect.com is another good online source. You can also have it drop shipped directly to the installer: Discount Tire Direct Installers. I have bought rim/tire from them, but never tried the drop ship to an installer method. They are comparative to tirerack.

Another tip is to shop for new tires near the end of the month. Chain stores have quotas to meet to acquire bonuses or spiffs. If near the end of the month, they have not met their quotas they will offer discounts/rebates/"buy3 - get 1 free" etc. My friend works at Firestone and that's what he told me.

Like someone already said Costco and BJs I would add Sams to that group as well. I've gotten great prices on Michelin tires at Sams quite a few times they're always running specials on tires.

Tirerack is a good choice and I use them a lot, but they are almost always more expensive than Costco when you add in shipping, and installation. Plus Costco has tire hazard included, which is extra at tirerack. Installation at most places runs a lot more than you think, as they have the install plus disposal fee, plus valve stem fee, plus, etc.... Don't mean to sound like a Costco commercial, I've used and like both.

Also, NTB will match Tirerack's price (plus what tire rack would charge for shipping) if you don't want to deal with mail order from tire rack. Curry's, with several locations in the area will also match tire rack's prices.
