This a.m. over breakfast I initially thought we were having a tremor. (I recall one centered in Annandale that I felt here in Springfield several years ago. ) Apparently, many concerned citizens voiced concerns to police and news organizations. The explanation I read on the WTOP website for the considerable distance of impact was the cloud layer and temperature profile of the atmosphere. Both combined to reflect/bounce the percussion along.

Yup, heard it this afternoon when I walked outside. My 4yo even heard it. FFX County sent out an e-mail alert sometime this morning when I was at work.

Did we ever! It shook our house and rattled the windows, and we're all the way out in Bristow. Our two-year-old's been talking about our shaky house all day.

We actually took a car ride this afternoon to try to identify the source, once my curiosity finally got the best of me. I thought maybe it was from a construction site not far from our neighborhood, but no dice, obviously. I'm glad to finally know what it was.

Yep, I heard it in W. Springfield. I was wondering. It sounded just like what I used to hear from Quantico when we lived near Dumfries/Montclair.

We could feel it in Chantilly, had no idea what that was.

Quantico exercise creates loud booms
March 2, 2010 - 9:57am
FAIRFAX, Va. - If you're hearing some thunder sounds and feeling shaking in Fairfax County, don't worry.
Fairfax County Police say the noise is coming from Quantico Marine base where explosives training is underway.

Folks who live near the base are used to noise from Quantico. What's different this time is that the noise is being heard as far away as Fairfax Station.

The Marine Corps says the noise from the explosives training is traveling farther Tuesday because it is cloudy and cold which allows the sound to bounce off the clouds.

The training is scheduled to happen everyday from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Friday.

The training is for Quantico's graduating officers.

I'm not suprised. I used to live in Triangle (right besides Quantico) and it wasn't a big deal.

I'm actually teleworking today in my home in Woodbridge and I haven't heard a thing, so I don't think Quantico is the cause of your booms!

Maybe all that construction around Ft. Belvoir?

I'm on the Base close to the training, and yes, they're out there blowing stuff up.

Interesting--didn't hear a THING in Woodbridge, yet it could be heard in Springfield.
