As an update, they finally decided this matter. Next year the tax will be raised to $1.30. Still not fun, but better than $1.41.

Last year the assessed value of our place went down about 80K, but our property tax nonetheless increased 300 bucks. So I suppose we should be happy to break even this year.

Meanwhile, we're searching for a new place to call home. How's about some of these property tax rates. They are a few years old, but you get the general idea.

Central Virginia Real Estate Taxes

Area Amount

Albemarle Co. .71/$100

Fluvanna Co. .48/$100

Greene Co. .72/$100

Louisa Co. .62/$100

Madison Co. .44/$100

Nelson Co. .55/$100

Orange Co. .47/$100

Buckingham Co. .44/$100

Augusta Co. .58/$100

Fishersville .58/$100

Staunton .96/$100

Stuarts Draft .58/%100

Waynesboro .70/$100

Where's Fluvanna County?

I've often thought Staunton would be a neat place to retire.

It's just east of Albemarle county. Population about 25K, 10K of whom live at Lake Monticello.

Largely rural county, but supposedly growing fast. Or was growing fast till the economy tanked.

Lake monticello is about two hours from here unless you drive like me, then it will take you a little longer. From lake monticello it's 20 miles to Charlottesville.

A retired teacher in FCPS makes more than a retired General or Admiral or the top GS grade. Teachers can then move to another county, or Falls Church City, and double their income. I know an FCPS teacher who retired at 52 and now works part time for Manassas City schools. Another teacher became an assistant principal in Maryland. Between FCPS retirement and her salary in Maryland, she's making $200,000 a year. Not bad. Her intentions are to do that for 10 years and then retire again, in her early 60's, with a retirement income between $150,000 and $175,000 between FCPS and MCPC. Not a bad retirement income at 62. Oh, I forgot, she will also have social security on top of that. So her retirement income will be closer to $200,000. wow.

You should to to VRS (virginia retirement system) to see for yourself what teachers get. The formula is 1.7% of pay for each year of service with a minimum of 30 years. Thus a teacher who retires with 30 years of service and has paid into the VRS for 30 years would get about half of their salary. That seems pretty fair to me.

Save your breath....Denton hates FCPS with a passion.

That nonsense about "90% pensions" fits her agenda and she's not interested in the truth. My mother was a retired FCPS teacher and I know what she made when she was working, and I know what her pension was. You are correct....it is about half.

Denton also loves to rail about how principals have near total control over their schools. I think that's great....it's called decentralization, and it helps reduce the "bureaucracy". One can only assume that Denton has run into principals that did not share her "vision" on how they should run their schools...

The problem is the employee contribution of 4% is extremely low for the level of benefit. 15 percent of compensation is paid out by the taxpayers. Anybody would love to have and abuse a system where your employer contributes almost 3 dollars for every 1 you put in.
