Just an honest question here....no agenda. When we drive to church on Sunday morning we always see a BUNCH of latinos standing at the 7-11 at Little River Turnpike and Hummer Rd. Are they there looking for work? When I lived in Seattle it was common to see latinos at Home Depot parking lots. Just curious.

Yeah I think that's a known day-laborer pick up area.

Yes, they are looking for work. Some or at least half are most likely illegal. And no i dont think its right.

In this area it is 7-11's that get the day laborers. The one in Springfield near Mikes, the one on Rt 1 in Woodbridge, just south of Lorton. In other area we have lived it has always been the hardware stores and garden centers. Strange.

In Vienna, the main spot for day laborers is the parking lot of the Cedar Park strip mall in the Town of Vienna, right across from the 7-11.

Really? I saw it in Albuquerque. Also, we used to see it quite a bit in Houston and in Los Angeles, even in rich areas like Manhattan Beach. IMO, if you live in a community that has a need for day labor work you'll see day laborers.

The winter storms mean there's a lot of work for day laborers right now. People are looking for help to cut up fallen trees and do other basic clean up work. The work needs to be done, they're getting it done, and crime doesn't seem to be a big issue at the pick up sites so right now they're ok by me. If the work runs out and crime becomes a problem, that's another matter.

Whether or not day laborers are illegal is up for dispute. People do day labor when they can't find other work--lots of people born in this country are unemployed. Some people see hispanics and assume they must be illegal. However, many hispanics are born in this country.

I live near that Hummer Rd 7-11 and they don't bother me...those guys are just trying to make a buck. Actually, the day laborers congregate from the 7-11 all the way up 236 to about the bowling alley. If I was going to blame anybody, it would be the 535 crooks in Congress who are bought and paid for by powerful interests looking for cheap labor (while we, the taxpayers pick up the tab for the social costs). Immigration laws are not enforced because Congress' owners don't want them enforced.

What always amazes me is that the day laborers stand there ALL day....seemingly long past the time that most contractors would be looking for help. It's a rough life...it's not uncommon for them to work all day and have the contractor split without paying them.
