Here's a variant on the "McMansion" debate: at some point, does a builder construct sufficiently interesting and/or individualized properties that the builder can aspire to escape the "McMansion" label?

Here are some local high-end builders in NoVa all holding themselves out as "custom builders":

New Homes & Custom Home Builders in Arlington & McLean VA | Tradition Homes (mostly Arlington)

Morris-Day Designers and Builders : Architecture and Renovation Design (mostly Arlington/McLean)

: : Buchanan Price : : New Home Builder | Custom Home Builder | McLean VA | Northern Virginia | Suburban Maryland (mostly McLean)

Ayrhill Homes Main Page (mostly Vienna)

J.P. Brehony - Your Hometown Builder (mostly Vienna)

Sekas Homes - Northern Virginia and Suburban Washington D.C.'s Premiere HomeBuilder (mostly Vienna/McLean)

Virginia Luxury Home Builder | On Your Lot Home Builder | New Home Builders in Virginia (all over NoVa)

Since I don't purport to have a clear-cut definition of a "McMansion," I can only go by instinct and personal aesthetics. By my reckoning, the last two of these builders - by virtue of the sheer number of homes they are building and/or the frequent construction of the same models - are putting up "McMansions," and the first five might actually escape that characterization if they so choose.

What are your thoughts - trying to have some fun here since Normie seems to be on temporary hiatus (enjoying, perhaps, her own McMansion and the warmer weather)!

Since I live in a house built by Tradition Homes, I have to vote no, their homes are not McMansions. But I am a little biased.

Here's a definite McMansion builder (infamous for tearing down older homes in established neighborhoods in Montgomery Co, MD and building monstrocities on them):

Mansion in a box - washingtonpost.com

They don't just build McMansions, they build MODULAR McMansions...

I think the Tradition Homes are really nice. They definitely have more space, but they aren't overwhelmingly massive.

I also like the new homes in the Morris-Day portfolio - and those additions are just gorgeous.
