I don't know if you've found an apartment yet, but I figured I would give you some insight. My boyfriend and I were just in Alexandria looking at apartments - we saw 23 places in two days. Whoever recommended Monticello-Lee Apartments to you earlier in this post made a great recommendation! They are so charming, right across the street from restaurants/bars (but in a cute charming way - they're not at all like the places in Pittsburgh that are across from restaurants/bars where you would worry about noise or young drunk ppl) - the renovations they are doing on the places are AMAZING - awesome hardwood floors and gorgeous new kitchens in all the apartments. We were so disappointed that they had a bunch of 1 bedroom apartments available, but no 2 bedroom places The one bedrooms did seem pretty spacious though! There is also another cute place down the street from Monticello called Hunting Terrace, and they were really cute too (nothing available until late July/early August though). The Hunting Point apartments that we also looked at seemed a little of the run-down side.... But Old Town was the most charming place I'd ever been, and Monticello-Lee would put you really close to it!

Yes, the Monticello-Lee apartments are the absolute best managed property I've seen in all of NoVA - partly because back in '07 when I was looking at them they were also amazingly *cheap*. I think they've raised their rents fairly significantly since then, but you still get a good deal (IMO) for a decently renovated, semi-historic, super-cute property in SE Old Town. Most of the units are quite small, though, as debernan noted.

Oh, and the little stone pineapple column caps in the courtyard are ADORABLE.

If you're still looking, I would highly recommend the Glendale Apartments Glendale Apartments . Location would be great for you (walk to Braddock, or take bus directly to Old Town), close to grocery and amenities, price is low (and includes utilities, safety is good (no concierge but each set of 4 units has its own locked front door. The units are small, don't have dishwasher, window AC only, and laundry is communal. But great for a young person starting out. My husband and I lived here 5 years to save up a down payment before buying a house last year. If you drive, you get parking. But you don't need a car (we didn't have one).
