I strongly discourage you from living in Sterling if you have that commute especially if you have to work normal business hours. There is zero traffic flow in DC; we all move as one big slow blob.

I used to commute from Ashburn to Bethesda and it was AWFUL. And it didn't matter what time of the day I went. On a good day it was about an 1 hour 15 minutes. The most it ever took me was 2 hours. Just traffic going slow. Awful.

Depending what hours you work, when you leave, etc. -- the commute could be bearable. Try Georgetown Pike east to the beltway and north on 295 until the Democracy Rd exit. If you're job is near River Road, that is an earlier exit and you could exit there and take backroads to your job.

In the morning, the majority of traffic is coming in south on 270 not heading north. Depends though; you should try it out. Good luck!

I used to work in Rockville, near Richard Montgomery High School. I live in Sterling and would take route 7 to Georgetown Pike, to the beltway, and 270 north to Rockville, 28 miles. I always allowed an hour and usually made it on time, leaving home at 7:30 am.

Sounds like this should be added to our alternate routes thread.

Correct 295 to 495 first though.

Alternative...

You could backtrack and take White's Ferry.
That will put you on River Road.

Yikes! You're right; I was typing too fast. Thanks for catching this.

Oh, that's my FAVORITE route. The only problem is the ferry ends up making the trip a lot longer. It's a nice choice for a weekend trip, however. Everyone should take White's Ferry at least once, just for the fun of it.
