Default Sales tax

Am I getting this right?

VA Sales tax is 5%
Meal tax ("restaurant food") is 10.5%
Food tax (groceries, I assume?) is 2.5%

Is there a different tax rate on big ticket items? For example, a car, TV, furniture? Help a newbie out, thanks!!

TV's, furniture, and other big ticket items bought in stores are still taxed at the same 5% rate.

Virginia sales tax on a car purchase is 3%.

You have it correct that some groceries (I think it's what they consider to be "essential items") are just taxed at 2.5%.

Meal tax - some jurisdictions don't have any, and some have 4 or 5%. That's added on top of the 5% sales tax, so you might pay a total of 9% or 10% sales tax at a restaurant. But some jurisdictions don't have a meal tax so you will just pay 5% sales tax.

Hope that helps, and welcome to Northern VA!

I don't believe that. I thought the only thing localities are allowed to charge are meals tax. They may indeed pay 9.25% total at restaurants in City of Fairfax. That is, there may be a 4.25% meals tax.

City of Manassas also has a meals tax, unless it has changed since I used to live there - it is 4.5%, so altogether you pay 9.5% sales tax at a restaurant in City of Manassas. It has nothing to do with groceries you buy at the store though, and I'm sure City of Fairfax is the same.

They get taxed at 5%. I don't know really what qualifies as essential versus non-essential. All I know is when I go grocery shopping, roughly half of what I buy is taxed at 2.5% and the other half at 5%. The bill always has two sales tax items at the bottom - a total of the sales tax for the 2.5% items and a total of the sales tax for the 5% items.

Just don't forget you pay personal property tax on them every year - it varies depending on where you live in Northern VA.
