Hello,
My son has attended public school within the McLean High School district since 5th grade ( Lemon Road Elementary, Longfellow Middle School and now two years at McLean HS). Along the way I have noticed quite a few of his friends that attend as well but do not live within the boundaries set by the school system. Does anyone know the ways parents manage this? I have always rented within the boundaries but find myself in a position that is harder than ever to manage. Sometimes a much more reasonable rent is just yards away. I don't want to break rules but this seems unfair. Of course I want my son to continue with the friends he has known so long. Thank you for any advice you can give.

This is the basic FCPS information on how to transfer:

Student Transfer Information

FYI - Lemon Road splits between Kilmer/Marshall and Longfellow/McLean. At the high school level, it is not difficult to transfer from Marshall to McLean, and vice versa, since Marshall has an IB program and McLean has an AP program. A transferring junior and his parents represent that the student will take at least four IB or AP classes at the out-of-boundary school before he graduates. If you move into the Falls Church HS district, however, you won't be able to pupil place back to McLean HS on that basis, since Falls Church - like McLean - is an AP school. [FYI - The deadline for pupil placements based on curriculum is mid-April, so you may need to deal with this soon if you're considering a move outside the McLean boundaries before the fall.]

Good luck!

Your son only has two years left of high school. If you are happy at McLean and don't want him to switch schools, the money you'd save is not worth risking fcps making him change schools if you move out of the boundary, which could very well happen if you try to skirt the rules.
