I suggest you check out Manassas and the Bloom's crossing area of Manassas Park. There are a number of apartments, condos and smaller townhomes for rent that are either walking distance or less than a five minute drive to the VRE, which goes to Union Station in DC. Many places are pet-friendly. We used to live in the Battery Heights condos off of Liberia and it was safe, quiet, affordable and walking distance to almost everything you'd need. 2BR condos rent for as little as $1100 a month. Yes, Manassas is farther out, but you will definitely get more for your money in terms of space and amenities.

Don't let people tell you that Manassas is a horrid place. Like all towns it has its bad neighborhoods but I know the area well and can assure you that good neighborhoods abound as well. My husband and I have just been through the same thing you're doing now and have found a place in Manassas Park that we love. Be warned though - if you find a place that's a really good deal, be prepared to grab it because rentals in the good areas usually go quick. The place we got was on the market for less than a day.

If being that far out doesn't appeal to you, I also second the suggestion to look at places in Alexandria. The Riverside apartments are pretty nice but I don't know if they allow pets. They do have daily free shuttles to the Huntington Metro station. The walls and ceilings of their units are really thick, too.

I lived in a townhouse rental community in Falls Church. It was called Tysons Glen. They also had apartments. I'm guessing that $1500 would cover a 2-BR apartment. They are not fancy - they're older units (from the 70's I'm guessing), but it is located conveniently near the beltway, and I believe they have a free shuttle to West Falls Church Metro. Oh yeah, the reason we moved there was because they accepted pets.

Our golden was just diagnosed with cancer this week and our vet recommend we take her to see an oncologist at a a place called "South Paws" in Fairfax. The practice had just about every vet specialty and we were very happy with the vet and the environment over all. I am sure you will find a great vet where ever you decide to live but I wanted you to know that we have this great resource in the area.

artfan1, we took our cat and dog to the Regional Veterinary Referral Center when they started to have more serious issues. The Regional Veterinary Referral Center Particularly with my cat, I feel they extended his life longer than may have been possible without their expertise. We were referred there by our vet (who has since moved on) at Springfield Animal Hospital which coincidentally is just down the road from the Referral Center.
