Default Leesburg Virginia is for suckers

Overpriced, high taxes, poor public transportation. If you want to buy groceries don't do it in leesburg! In addition to a 5% sales tax, there is a 2.5% food tax, and in addition to that if you buy, say, a premaid salad at the grocery store there is a 3.5% food prep tax. Add it all up and you get to pay 11% in taxes! Check out Description of Taxes and Fees - Leesburg, Virginia (Living)

What is ironic about the high taxes in Leesburg is that, as a whole, it is pretty right wing republican. Arn't those people opposed to taxes? No shortage of "W" stickers on SUV's in these parts.

If you are looking for a overpriced poorly built townhouse or a McMansion with a dreadfull commute then look no further than Leesburg. As a whole the downtown has an artficial quaint feel. It is where people go to buy antiques who don't really know antiques but think that if they pay more somehow that translates into them knowing more about antiques. Well I guess it makes people feel good about themselves and they pay the price for that artificial good feeling. Most shop employees I get the impression work in retail in addition to another job in order to be able to afford to live in Leesburg.

I lived in the Fields of Leesburg for about a year and a half. My ethnicity and education are not typical for The Fields. I only qualified because I was in school the previous year and, well, once your in they can't kick you out. The population is mostly hispanic and african american. What I have read in previous posts about the Fields seems pretty dead on. What I like about the fields is that there is ethnic diversity, my neighbors were really nice. I like the fact that people are outside sitting on the steps socializing. The Fields might have a popoluation with little money, but it makes up for it in its diversity and friendly atmosphere. And excluding Sundays, it is kept clean. I have to admit there are lots-o-kids. I have never been asked for money and they all seemed nice. I have never been brave enough to enter the pool, not an ool, I think it has it's share of p. I had no fear walking through the Fields or down Plaza St. at any hour.

I worked in Leesburg for 15 yrs and saw the traffic situation get progressively worse. Anyway, I think it depends mostly on your work hours. If you commute during non-standard times, Leesburg is ok, although you may need to eat the Greenway tolls to keep your commute time down. But if your work hours are even remotely close to normal rush hour times, I would DEFINITELY look for opposite direction commutes. Maybe live in Reston or Herndon, and preferably close to the toll road.
