Ashburn and Sterling would be worth looking into. I live in Ashburn Farm and like it a lot. Some parts of Sterling I like are Cascades, Lowes Island, Countryside...

If their older child is gifted, they would want to avoid Loudoun County schools, though. My understanding is that LC schools have a terrible, barely-there gifted program.

Fairfax county is moving in the same direction, doing less and less for truly gifted students. According to them, everyone is gifted! Education for gifted students is not in vogue among the educrats.

If you know your younger child's diagnosis and have an idea of what kind of special ed he or she would need, then you might want to start there, finding a school that will best meet his or her needs, especially if you'll be starting during preschool years.

I agree. The schools in Loudoun County have good ratings overall but you might look into which special ed programs people are happiest with in case they vary between schools.

A coworker of mine lived in the Fairfax County public school system. He had one special ed child out of three. He was extremely impressed with their program. He moved to Loudoun County expecting similar services and terribly disappointed (he didn't do his homework). He ended up pulling his kids out and finding some private school that worked for them. This was about 3 years ago, so maybe things have improved.

I don't know much in terms of gifted programs/special ed programs but I do have a friend who is moving to California as her son is autistic and she said VA was rated like 2nd to last in the county for treatments and California is like number 2. I know Loudoun schools have a good reputation in terms of regular schooling, but...My thought would be for you to call the school districts and ask what programs they have. Loudoun and Fairfax both have decent websites.
