Hi all,

Sorry if this question is a repeat but I will ask it anyway since my situation is different.

I currently live in western PA but will start working in Rosslyn in June and am planning to get a 3bd apartment or town house asap. I have 3 kids going to elementary school. Wife will be staying at home for now. Major deciding factors are good elementary school and shortest possible commute. I can afford to pay at most $1700 for rent.

From what I gathered so far, West Falls Church, Fairfax city and Reston are my best bets though I haven't visited the places yet. Any ideas on apartments or town homes is welcome.

Thanks,

OP,

This property sounds like it would be right up your alley

Shadowood -- Reston Condo -- Rent w/ Generous option to Buy (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/apa/1731200193.html - broken link)

You are pretty good with your choice of communities in terms of a decent commute, though I wouldn't go much further west than Reston. All of NOVA has pretty decent public school so you should also be ok in that regard.

EDIT:

I should have also suggested Alexandria...you'd have a reverse commute and great schools as well. I posted a possible townhouse below

Reston and Fairfax City will give you a killer commute compared to Falls Church. There are HOV restrictions on I66 during the morning and afternoon commutes.

Stick to looking for something in North Arlington, East and West Falls Church (Stay North of 66), and Vienna.

Reston is not a bad commute at all to Rosslyn. I disagree w/ above statement.

Thanks for the great suggestions folks. I have to make one thing clear though. I was thinking of taking the metro instead of driving. Sorry for not clearing this up in my post.

It'll be a few years before you'll be taking the subway from Reston. It ain't built yet.

I don't think the recommendation to look in Falls Church and North Arlington north of 66 is very practical. The poster would have very few options if he's looking for 3 bedroom rentals for $1700 or less/month.

At that price range, there are a lot more properties available in the Springfield or Alexandria parts of Fairfax County, as well as in Reston. The schools may not have test scores as high as in the so-called "McLean part of Falls Church," but they are still part of the same county-wide system.
