I have toured my districted elementary school and since I have the option of renting/ buying elsewhere in Fairfax County I was wondering what the other's kindergartens are like. What were some of the school year activities? What were the kids doing in class for math, reading, writing, exercise, social events. Did you like the teachers? Would you recommended the school and what school was it? Thank you, Micknmay

If you have options on where to live, decide if you want a full day or half day kindergarten. Both exist in FCPS. The full day programs will have all the "specials" in them, ie: music, PE, art. Not so sure about the half day. After that, the kindergarten curriculum is the same. Here's a link to information in kindergarten, Early Childhood >Instructional Services Department I'm not sure where to find a list of the full vs half day programs.

The half-days also have "specials" (music, pe, art, computer). I would opt for a full-day school though.

It all comes down to teacher - even in the same school. At my daughter's school she had an excellent kindergarten teacher - one we requested on the advice of a friend with an older daughter who had the "not good" kindergarten teacher.

Full-day and half-day are different, however. Full day goes into subjects more in depth because there is more time. Writing isn't rushed. At half day, more things are sent home to finish at home. Specials are twice per week in full day (art and music, I believe). They are once per week in half day. You really need to supplement your child with outside activities if s/he is in half day because it is a very short day. Mondays are only 2 hours long. Half-day may be better for the younger child who isn't quite ready for a long day. It IS a long day.

And I wouldn't pick a school based on kindergarten. It's just one year.

As for activities - they had differentiated reading groups, writing in journals, basic math - first learning numbers and then simple addition, holidays/seasons, a couple of field trips, and any all-school activities there were - international night, Dr. Seuss night, bingo night, etc. We really enjoyed my daughter's kindergarten year.
