Hmmmmm, I guess my idea of casual and alot of people on here is totally different, just goes to show that what works for one person may not work for another. I just have to much going on in my life to ponder about what a total stranger is wearing on the weekends. Truth be told those that we consider as "casual dressers" probably could care less what others think of them.

On the other side of the coin, casual can sometimes be a sign of someone who is so comfortable in their own skin they feel no need to dress to conform to what society dictates as acceptable dress.

One reason is that there's no longer any real status associated with clothing and fashion. Cheap clothing made in Asia made just about everything accessible to everyone. When clothing could no longer make the statement "I'm wealthier than you" or "I'm from a higher social class than you are" (because of all the cheap knockoffs) it just was no longer worth getting gussied up. Now people use homes and cars to make those statements.

But it's true that the more "well-dressed" (and well-mannered) you are, the better service you get...anywhere. I aspire for the well-dressed part, but make no compromises when it comes to having good manners.

having worked both in retail and the restaurant business in my life, I always appreciated the well mannered people as opposed to the well-dressed, personally I found the well-dressed seemed to think they deserved much more than the well mannered. We seem to forget that "clothes don't make the person." What a shallow minded people we have become. It sucks to think that I am being judged on what I wear as opposed to what I have to offer the world as a human being.

(And note that I'm not exactly complaining about the schlump[iness?], and I certainly don't consider its opposite some kind of vulgarly blingy/label-flaunting style, as do many of the posters here, apparently.. I'm actually kind of glad that I don't encounter many women who make me think, "Wow, she looks really, really cool/good/whatever; I feel kind of frumpy in comparison." It does make me cringe every time I hear about "East Coast elites," though, since "elites" are generally thought of dressing well, AFAIK.)
Oh GAWD, how tacky! She spelled "affluence" wrong! (I promise it was a typo - I wrote it in the middle of the night in the midst of my largest move ever.) Anyway, I'm in my new home in Fairfax City now, and there are just as many shclumpy dressers (and just plain unattractive people) here as there were in Huntington. Actually, I think Huntington might have had a bit fewer, since the highrise complexes tended to attract a lot of out-of-towners who I'm sure rented their places sight unseen (and then got out of there as quickly as possible once they got a taste of the neighborhood).

If we were allowed to have signatures on C-D, I'd quote that old post describing NoVA women's fashion as "the Fred Flintstone look."
