I was running along the Mt. Vernon trail today and I saw a dead fish on the river bank that looked to be (easy) three and a half feet and maybe 30 pounds. This was not the deep water mouth of the potomac area -- it was a mere five miles south of the Wilson bridge. Any guesses on whether this thing was a catfish. If not, what might it have been? I didn't think there was anything but small trout and bass in the Potomac.

Was probably a catfish or carp as I can't think of much else commonly found around here of that size (even snakeheads don't get to 42 inches). As to what you thought, there are no trout in this part of the river. Bass yes. It's a pretty big river so can support some pretty large fish.

On a related note... did anyone else hear something about a shark being caught in the Potomac River the other day?
Does anyone know what part of the Potomac that was? What on earth was a shark doing there?

I guess in the Potomac the catfish grow to the size of a bull shark.

Don't worry, the Bull Sharks will be here soon enough as they eventually become acclimated to the fresh water. I fully expect within 10 years to encounter one in Little Hunting Creek. On the bright side, maybe they'll eat the snakeheads!

If it will keep fools from swimming in the river, I'm in favor of having a shark or two. Hey, why not anchor a few giant plastic sharks in the section above the falls? Might just save a few lives.

There are untold numbers of huge catfish in the Potomac - Tim Trigger (Cat fisherman extraordinaire) helped this kid land a state record on the Potomac a few weeks ago.
