Hey! I'm moving to the Northern VA area for ~2 months. My work will be close to the Sheraton Premiere hotel in Tyson's Corner (8661 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Virginia 22182). I'm thinking about renting an extended stay type hotel in Sterling, VA and traveling the Leesburg Pike (Hwy 7). Hwy 7 seems to connect my hotel and work directly.

My question is- should i expect considerable traffic along this route? I will probably leave around 8:30 am and return around 8 pm, on weekdays.

Thanks in advance for your reply..

You won't have any problems coming home...probably take you 30 minutes. The morning is a different story. WIll probably take you 45 minutes or more depending on the lights going down 7.

Good luck!

What time do you need to be to Tysons? If you're leaving at 8:30 to get there by 9, that's not enough time. If you're leaving at 8:30 to get there at 9:30, that's not going to be a problem. While it's not a direct line, you might also consider using 267, the Toll Road, in the morning to get to Tysons. There would be no need to do so in the evening, since Route 7's issues: congestion and construction, are over.

Thanks to you both for your replies..

So, in the morning I could take the 267 - and it wont have heavy traffic coming into Tyson's from Dulles? (I need to be there by 9)

I'd probably experiment a little bit and leave earlier in the morning to travel via rt 7 (no tolls). Get to the office a little early, or get to a Starbucks close to the office a little early. Rt 7 within Tysons is pretty congested lately with the metrorail construction going on. You will hit that congestion with either route .... although I guess that you could pass the Rt 7 exit off of the toll road and take the Spring Hill exit (all the way to the right at the main toll plaza). That exit might get you past some of the rt congestion. Congested traffic near Tysons during the morning commute is simply a reality .... it might be bumper-to-bumper or flowing at 50 mph ..... it's still congested. All in all ..... there are worse commutes than Sterling to Tysons.

If your company is paying for the hotel stay, why not just stay in Tysons or in Arlington (reverse commute)?

267 can get backed up pretty bad as well. Just depends on the day and who isn't paying attension!

8:15 would be a safer time to leave, even if using 267. You can always do as someone else suggested and grab a cup of coffee if you're early.

OP, no matter which route you take, 8:30 in the morning trying to head in an Easterly direction in the DC area will be jampacked with traffic.
