Taking this route every day now.... Are there camera traps in VA? Trying to be careful of course, but curious.

Virginia doesn't use speed cameras, but DC and MD definitely do. But please believe VA writes a whole mess of tickets.

I saw on the news recently that Arlington will be using cameras soon. I think they will be red light cameras, but I'm not sure.

I am well aware of VAs propensity to dish out tickets..... There's one cop that hangs out every day on the right hand side of 123 heading west right next to this big tree and some electrical box, i can't figure out why he's there though cause it just seems like an odd hiding spot.

Speed enforcement cameras in VA would have to be approved by the General Assembly and, to date, they have not.

However, when you are on the GW Parkway...you are not "in" VA. You are on Federal property, patrolled only by the US Park Police. If Uncle Sam were to decide to use speed cameras on the GWP....the State of Virginia would have ZERO input in the matter.

I'll concur with this. For the longest time I was the only one of my friends who had a squeaky-clean driving record. Then earlier this Spring I got nailed on Route 7 near Round Hill for doing 68 in a 55. Yes, I was speeding. Yes, I accepted responsibility and paid my fine. I just really don't understand, though, why the local police don't hang out more in residential areas where speeders really are a potential danger to the general welfare of others. I fail to see how me traveling 68 in a 55 zone on a rural stretch of Route 7 outside of Round Hill was dangerous. I'm actually surprised I don't see more cops in Vienna writing tickets with all of the speed humps, stop signs, and "Don't hit our latch-key kids that are playing in the street" signs.

I agree....it's MUCH more convenient for the police to hang out only where OTHER people are speeding...rather than where I'm speeding!

And, oh yeah, let's let each individual motorist decide what is a safe speed for any particular stretch of road!

Are you kidding? The Town of Vienna has its own police force but little crime. As a result, the police department's main activities seem to be (1) patrolling the Cedar/Park area, which does get a bit nasty at times; and (2) handing out speeding tickets, particularly during the evening hours, to motorists on Route 123/Maple Avenue. By focusing on Maple Avenue rather than the side streets, the police can issue most of the tickets to folks who live outside the Town and haven't yet learned what a speed trap Maple Avenue is.

As to the GW Parkway, lots of people drive at excessive speeds, but there are few places actually to pull people aside to ticket them.

No, this is writing tickets for revenue vs. writing tickets for public safety. The cops in Virginia seem to be interested in the former.

Oh yeah, before you make a snarky remark. Just remember I'm Kentucky's problem now and they have FAIR speed limits.
