I think people who were raised in Lake County are pretty adamant about LC being the region. But fomer LC residents who have moved into Porter, Newton & LaPorte counties still want to hold on to their region roots, so they took the name with them.
When I went to college near Fort Wayne, that was the first time I'd ever heard the term "region rat" and that was from the people I was in college with from Hammond, Gary, Whiting and East Chicago. But rrah is right. I too remember learning about the Calumet Region in high school history.

Are there any communities that are similar to this? We went to Valparaiso University for college, although didn't really think about moving back later on. We love the area around the dunes...but really looking for a younger area since we are only in our twenties. We do plan on having a family in a few years.
Any suggestions for finding a place to live? any communities that stand out?

peachkitten, to get back to the original question, and in the interest of being more positive than I have been so far in this thread, let me say that if you DO find this younger, laid-back community in NW Indiana, please report back and let us know! I'll do anything to get out of my current lease to move there. (I'm not joking.) The closest such place I've found so far is North Chicago, and that's just too far of a commute for my job in Valpo.

There are still nice neighborhoods in Hammond. Munster is growing, but its getting caught up in the "traffic from H*ll" category, right along with Highland & Schererville.
If I ever move back to Indiana (hopefully), I will probably move to LaPorte County, since my kids are there. Maybe Porter County, but not Lake County. They've had their property taxes so messed up in recent years, I don't want any part of that.

Ha! Except that I have to drive or ride through the stink to get to a place with anything going on.

Does Munster have more of a younger/single/moreliberal/artsy/hipster/whatever kind of scene than Valpo, or is it similar?
If it's similar, it probably makes more sense for me stay where I'm 10 mins. from work and an hour from downtown, rather than move to where I'm 30-40 mins. from work and 30-40 mins. from downtown, since I go to work 5 days a week and play 1-2 days per week.
If Munster would be more my style than Valpo, though, it might be worth the commute to work.
