Even Southern Lake County is different than Northern Lake County. The original "Region" was always Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago, and then their suburbs. Jasper and Newton counties came later since they were too far from Indy and closer to us plus with some of ours and Chicago's Population moving there and commuting for work up North since land is cheaper there. I think that will even slow since Gas Prices have never been higher. I spent thirty three years in the Glen Park section of Gary where my entire family is from and was the last one to get out two years ago where I now Live in Crown Point and yes I'm white with and even have a college degree. I now have nine years in at Mittal Steel (Former Inland Steel in East Chicago, was still inland when I started). I find my new neighbors a world apart from where I came from and really don't fit in too well. They think I am beneath them in not so many words and some type of bad ass rift raft from up North when in fact I was a Gary Police Officer for five years but left for better pay in the mill. I don't know which is worse to tell people, That I am from Gary or was a Gary cop or both. Shame that people think that every single one of us is a bad apple.

Mr Robo, my parents moved to Crown Point from the Brunswick neighborhood in Gary. I graduated from high school there, and never felt "at home" there. My parents lived there for 30 yrs and had a close-knit group of friends that they played cards with, who were all from Gary. Other than that, they were "acquainted" with CP people and that was it. It is not a friendly town if you are an outsider.
Tell them you were born & raised in Glen Park, and are a former Gary cop. If they hold that against you who cares? Hold your head high, they're the ones with a problem.

Hey guys, sorry for the delayed response from me. I misplaced my password and been looking for it the last few days. Yea, excellent point Artemis. That is exactly what I do. You said your family was from Brunswick? My family was not far. They were from Tolleston. Then relocated to Glen Park in the thirties. An Capt. Dan yes, I went to Lew Wallace. My Mom and Dad Graduated there early sixties. I went there one year but my mom took me out due to some problems and I ended up graduating from Merrillville by using a family members address that lived in North Merriville. She wanted me to go to Andrean but could not get financial assistance for me.

It used to be a great place but after most of the factories, steel mills, and business closed people started doing whatever they could to survive...stealing,killing,robbibng...etc...and now most of the homes and businesses are boarded up! If you ever go ther stay away from BROADWAY. The more north you go on that street the scarier it gets!
