Nah no joke last weekend i was in gary on business talking to some potential clients. this meant i had to stay in a hotel for the weekend and this place is rough. undoubtedly there are good people., like everywhere on this planet, but the bad ones are there and in high and violent amounts. i was walking through brunswick and a gang of 5 men, black and white and a latino i think, were breezingly walkin dwn the street with spiked bats and guns in there hands, one of them shouted lets kill them (n word) and then i hear later that 2 black men had been shot dead and tortured in black oak later on that day. i saw about 200 bums and nearly got attacked by one for my wallet and my shoes. i would not live in this place, i was constantly scared and it will NOT get better soon. i promise this.

You were WALKING through Brunswick ?? Wow
I grew up there, and I wouldn't DRIVE through there with a shotgun in my lap. I'm glad you're ok and I hope you don't have to go back.

Gosh, when I drive to Chicago from Indy, I make it a point to detour so I'm not even driving BY Gary on the expressway. It's THAT bad!

Gary is a cesspool. 10 years ago, it was "somewhat" safe to drive through there during the day. Now, I wouldn't even consider it, even if I had a gun with me. At night? Forget it. It's the plague of NWI, and it's spilling over into neighboring towns. Northern Merrillville is catching Gary's disease now too. Damez is right..the people there are animals.

I agree with the above post. One of the most important points noted above is that Gary's problems have affected neighboring communities, most notably Merrillville (closest to the Gary border). Towns such as M'ville and Griffith have a somewhat lower level of attractiveness than they would otherwise as as a result of their proximity.
I'm not sure it's unsafe to drive through Gary during the day, though there's no point in doing so unless necessary.

Like all communities with low-income residents, there's going to be crime. Then again, I couldn't count the times I've left my garage doors open, car unlocked, went out at night, etc, etc, etc. Never had a problem, and I live on the north side of M'ville (derisively called "South Gary" by my fellow whities who are afraid of their own shadows).
I bought my house here five years ago, leaving a "changing neighborhood" in nearby Hammond where I was part of the shrinking majority to where I'm at now - where I am distinctly a minority. I checked out the neighborhood homes - all well kept, btw - and moved in without a qualm.
Gary in the daytime? Probably not a big problem. The folks who drive from Sh*tcago through the region and are too scared to go down 80/94? How about you just stay in that wonderful place that you think is so great (and presumably safe to live and work in, eh?).
Oh yeah, if you're THAT afraid of coming over here you could just carry. Oh wait, that wonderful state of yours doesn't permit that. does it?

I used to live at 54th & Harrison. That neighborhood has been on a downward slide for years.
I usually carry when I come to Indiana (I have a permit), and still won't go to my old neighborhood.
I've got no reason to go there.
There has never been anything appealing about Griffith. It's just there.
