Crown Point is a typical small town that's rapidly becoming a suburb of Chicago. (There are many such towns in NW Indiana, in various stages of that transition.) As you can see from others' comments above, yes, Gary is that bad.

They actually had a triple homicide in the Miller area ... and that's supposed to be the safe area of Gary.

sounds like things are getting a little rough up there. Maybe Mitch can issue an edict to have Lake County taxes reassessed so the people there can pay for better police protection. They need it.

Nah, he's too busy letting BP dump sludge and lord knows what else into Lake Michigan ... Rahm Emmanuel is angry! He's not a guy whose bad side I'd want to be on.

Gary is that bad dont let anyone sugar coat it.
Drugs are rampent, crime is bad, and people are very unfriendly.
It is a town of abandoned steel mills. and dark wet streets.
Like anything else there are some good pockets of areas, but you dont have to drive far to find trouble.
If you are wanting to locate to the Chicago/Indiana area stick with Merriville

I read that Gary is even worse than St. Louis.

Work in Gary, but live elsewhere. Crown Point would be an easy commute.

If you're looking for a nice community near Gary and with not too great of a commute, I personally prefer Munster and Highland over Crown Point. Not to mention, if you live around Merillville or Hobart, traffic is horrendous(especially on US 30!), in comparison to the Munster/Highland area.
As for Gary, I looked at the site that artemis posted a link to, and thought it was very interesting, considering that I've read up on Gary history and on abandoned buildings within that city before in the past, but never had seen that particular site before. So I'd like to thank artemis for mentioning that site here, since I'm somewhat a history buff myself.
