Can anyone tell me the good and bad parts, if any, of Michigan City, 'cause I'd like to know what I need to look out for when I move? Thanks

Default Michigan City

I grew up in M.C. in the 70's when it wasn't a bad place to live. The economy was good then, not now.
What's there:
Not much in the way of night life or good restaurants. Go to New Buffalo Michigan if trendy food is what you like. North end has a new casino and a hugh outlet mall if you like that stuff. Otherwise the south end of town has all the fast food you could want, theaters, Wal-mart, etc.
Beautiful Lake Michigan which has a fantastic coastline with great residential communities. I wouldn't live anywhere else except at the beach, a very safe area.
overall, the downtown mainstreet is economically depressed. Parts of the downtown (North-end) look like a ghost town. Schools are pretty bad. Occaisional shootings, drug-related, I am guessing, in the poor parts of town.

Where to live: If you are renting, stay close to the beach and you can get a super cheap Sept.-June 1st rental anywhere in the beach areas - $600/month for a decent house. You'd have to move out in the Summer months - high season rates, $1500/week. There are nicer nieghborhhoods near downtown but you will have to find them.

La Porte is closer to Michigan City than Valparaiso. Valparaiso is a nice place.

Nice places in Michigan city if you don't want to move out of Michigan City due to gas the I would say Trail creek a township of Michigan city, Pottawattamie park, Old edge wood, some parts of village green try to live buy a police officer in Village green. On the outskirts 100 North, 300, 400 all on the outskirts of town still considered michigan city, Long Beach. Place not live Michigan Blvd, anywere by the prison.and west of Franklin going toward the beach basically out by th oulet mall. Don't live behind any of the wal-mart buildings or near Ihop cause its bad thier. Thats about it if you don't want to communte but remember that all citys have bad areas even laporte and Valpo even if they look nice trust me valpo isn't as safe as it looks trust me i use to hang out in those areas and i stoped because of ther drive bys in both citys so its not only michigan city. Acuttly i would say chesterton its only 12 minutes away. Also it does have cheaper gas sometimes and rents pretty cheap anywhere from 450 to 1500 dollars really no bad place except when its summer everybody is out and about but its mostly tping and stuff thats the bad crime over thier.

New Buffalo is trendy now ?? Well I'll be! I can remember when Michigan's drinking age was only 18. We'd all pile into a car & head to New Buffalo. Drank at a bar that had a lot of deer heads, etc on the wall. A real flannel shirt kind of place.

Brings back memories .....

Default Major Update

Reading these comments (which I know were very true when posted) is amazing. It has been several years since these postings and a lot has changed about Michigan City, IN.

This article sums some of it up quite nicely! Michigan City makes Forbes list

I don't know.

I just drove through the downtown (a couple blocks east of the Lighhouse Mall) ... and I had the same reaction I always did/do ... "what a waste".

Maybe that area isn't considered "downtown" or maybe I'm not looking close enough, but I've always thought what a stinkin' pity it is that a large majority of those storefronts are empty. It's like a very mini-Memphis. There is such HUGE potential there - and from the tone of the article it seems as if they're making progress - but it has always saddened me.

That and the South Shore tracks right down the middle of a residential street.
