The truth of the matter is that you need to be in Chicago Il; not Indiana. The company sounds like they are trying to cut costs while your husband bears the burden of the commute and that can be up to an hour or more. Let's not talk about ALL of the toll roads surrounding Chicago, and the traffic traps with tickets ( i.e. rolling stops, running yellow lights, etc) your husband will get.

Since you're from Florida, get ready to freeze your A$$ off, get a whole new winter waredobe and snow equipment. Midwesterners on average are hardworking dedicated employees. Companies still except you to get to work "on TIME". This means getting up shoveling yourself out of your driveway an hour before you go to work. Attitude differ from region to region... Indiana people are friendly while Chicago is rude. This is just the icing on the cake.

I lived in Texas and moved home to take care of my MOM until she died and I hated every minute up there which was 3 years. Your name will change from Sunshine to the Darkside of the Moon when you get there....IT IS NOT FLORIDA

Maybe the company isn't ponying up the money to be able to afford to live in Illinois.

And anyone who complains about the weather ... Knowing that it's going to be cold and snowy ... Well, I got nothing for that except ...what were you expecting.

For goodness sakes dont listen to eyewrist comments
People in the Chicago Metro are very friendly and the winters are not bad
no they are not Fla but its not bad at all

Do your self a huge favor and contact a real estate company say in places like Tinley Park, IL, Crestwood, IL , Elmhurst, IL , Palos Park, IL , Oak Forest , IL Oak Park, IL Munster, In
In bottom line do your research and compare your advantages and disadvantages of living in one state vs. the other

If your husband is on call you really owe it to your family to live in a central location vs. spending quality time commuting at all hours of the day and night.

When its all said and done Illinois really is not that expensive - espicially when you factor in commuting costs

Just do your self a huge favor and get an opinion from a real estate agent that is not in NorthWest Indiana and you will get a round about general idea
they will have hard statistics for you to look thru

Both people in NWI and Chicagoland are good people and in general nice and will be very open to people who move in from outside the area

The area also has a lot to offer for you and your family with many many things to do and see -

Correction you forgot that since January of this year Illinois income taxes are almost 2% higher. I would rather pay 3.4% flat rate compared to 5% flat rate. more $$ the government gets their hands on the more they waste it.

My goodness you people get quite sidetracked, let's stay on the topic and try to help out. The main question I have for sunshinestate is, will your husband work IN CHICAGO city limits, or throughout the Chicagoland area, which may include far suburbs of Chicago? If he will only work in Chicago itself, I feel that finding a place in Munster, Dyer, Schererville or St. John will lead to a managable commute for him, I do it every day. However, if he will have to travel to the north and northwest suburbs regularly, I agree that living in Northwest Indiana would not be a wise choice. More specifically, if he will have to drive to towns north of I-88 on a regular basis, I'd recommend not living in NWI.

I am unsure I know he will be working in industrial plants like power plants, mills or foundries or something similar along those lines (i am uncertain what plants are up there). and thanks for all the helpful comments!!!

Thanks everyone for the help I really appreciate it I will be carefully considering all options and taking into account all advice given while doing research!! Lets hope I don't freeze to bad my 1st year up there **Fingers Crossed** I know it is totally different but having our family together is worth any struggle that doesn't affect my kids negatively. IE: Cold weather. They may not like it but they will have there family together and everything they need. Again thanks so much

He is according to the poster working all over the city of Chicago 24-7 on call.
Now you tell me since you do the commute from Dyer, IN
How is traffic on the Ryan at 8am and coming home at 4:30 if I am correct
commute times would be pretty unimaginable unless you like looking out your front window for 2 hours or greater. That is if your coming from the loop I cant imagine if your coming in way up from the Edens to the Ford into Indiana
Do some justice for this your girl and be honest - that commute would blow!

These are perfect examples why I mentioned she contact a real estate agent both in the southwest burbs and maybe the burbs in the near west like oak park- This way she would get ideas from both angels

Who cares , personally I write off taxes its a wash - In addition I would gladly do my neighbors a fair share to get the economy back on track .

There is also not a local option income tax in Illinois as there is in some Indiana counties. COIT or CAGIT in addition to this

You would easily recoup the savings in fuel costs and having quality time spent with your family vs. saving pennies on the buck

Suppose you have a party line to to save money and do with local over the air channels Geez -

Kids tend not to notice cold weather when they're having fun. When it snows, get them out sledding, building snowmen, etc. See if the area you land in has outdoor events around Christmastime that kids would enjoy. In no time, they won't be bothered by it.
