I've always been interested in the Miller area but haven't been back there in awhile. Has anyone been there recently and what are the thoughts from folks of what the long term plans should be for that area?

I'm curious after reading the article below.

Well I'm highly skeptical that Miller will become "the Hamptons of the Midwest," as the mayor puts it, I think of all places in the Gary/Hammond/E. Chicago area, Miller is by far the nicest. I think it has a lot of potential, but more importantly, there are people who live in Miller who really want to make it a great place and are actually doing things to make that happen.
Here's another article if you're interested: Placemaking, makeovers renewing Miller Beach as a premier destination in Northwest Indiana — Metropolitan Planning Council

I don't really know what the long term plans should be for the area, but I think the grassroots revitalization is definitely the right track for the community to be on, and I think marketing it as a center for the arts really could be a good idea.

I know in Miller, there have been nice modern homes and upscale homes constructed here and there. They have not sold that fast because they are pricey but at least high standards were maintained.

Personally, if the Miller area is able to somehow de-annex itself from Gary, I think they would be MUCH better off as their own community.

Gary could use the shot in the arm and let the prosperity of Miller Beach spread to other neighborhoods that are adjacent to Miller.
So lets keep Miller beach with Gary. not to mention Gary needs the tax revenue BADLY. especially if its ever going to rebound.

Miller Beach has always been a well-off area of Gary. The only difference is that there were also other neighborhoods in Gary on the complete opposite side of town (like Morningside) that were pretty well-off too. The "prosperity" of Morningside didn't spread to adjoining neighborhoods. The crime and poverty of the surrounding neighborhoods pretty drove prosperity of the better neighborhoods out to Merrillville and Crown Point. The thing helping Miller is that it is more isolated from the rest of Gary. The wealth from Miller will not spread to other neighborhoods because I would think that the folks who live in Miller only live there because of the nearby lake amenities and not because it is Gary.

MB is away from every where else in the city so it wouldn't spread.
