I'm looking at two houses, one at 1327 171st Pl and the other at 6253 Monroe Ave. Both Hammond, but I believe the first one is considered South Hammond. Can you guys tell me how these areas are? Would it be safe for an 18 month old to be able to play, and for us to take walks and whatnot? Any caveats that I should be aware of? Thank you.

I'm going to assume the 18 month old is being supervised by a parent or adult?

The first home listed is in the Woodmar neighborhood of Hammond. It is a relatively safe area of Hammond for the most part. Mostly owner-occupied homes. Two blocks south of there is the Columbia Center low-income housing. This development has been mostly revamped and there is a new senior living component. Surprisingly, it does not have many of the typical "project crime" that many people have seen destroy low-income housing projects. IF anything were to be a worry though, I would say it would be the Columbia Center. With that being said, I believe you would be fine in this first neighborhood.

The second neighborhood definitely feels more urban in character. Homes are much closer together, some streets have more multiple-unit dwellings, and it is a generally busier neighborhood in terms of traffic. As far as Hammond goes, the first neighborhood would feel more like a "working-class suburban area" and this neighborhood more like a "working-class urban area". It is not the most unsafe area, but definitely not regarded as safe as neighborhoods south of 165th St.

I assumed this was the case, but there are way too many instances when parents are just stupid. We read or hear about them daily it seems.
