Looking forward to Whole Foods opening in Schererville in 2014. Mariano's (Mariano's : Mariano's) has a similar brand and would also likely do well in Northwest Indiana. I've gone to the Mariano's in Frankfort, IL and totally enjoyed the shopping experience.

What do you think?

If anything I'd like to see Trader Joe's. I'm quite surprised WF is opening shop in NWI before they are. But normally when one of the two opens somewhere it isn't long before the other opens nearby. Don't know about Mariano's so I can't speculate.

Richb...Why don't you think another upscale grocer, such as Mariano's, will enter the NWI market?

It will be interesting to see if Whole Foods influences other upscale grocers to enter the NWI market.

WF's distrubution center in Munster makes sense that they are finally succumbing to the cries of our residents screaming "why is there nowhere for us to shop" I anticipate Trader Joe's showing up before Mariano's.

That being said, Bob Mariano has done an impeccable job at crushing Dominick's (no doubt his plan). I wonder if his success after Dominick's pulled out of Chicago that he would attempt to dominate NWI next. Being close to the Greektown Mariano's for work, I know I sure enjoy the experience.

I don't think they will be able to anytime soon. Taking on so many former Dominick's all at once is going to be a big job and hopefully they didn't take a too big a bite (though they can't allow other operators to get those locations). Since there are no Dominick's to take over in NW Indiana I don't see one coming soon. Mariano's has for the most part avoided the southern end of the Chicago area, with far fewer locations then the north and west too.

Mariano's relies on the Roundy's distribution network, they'd really be stretching things to get into NWI. Every extra mile of diesel cuts into their already thin margins.

They already have a store in Tinley Park and just purchased one in Shorewood, near Joliet. Not sure why they wouldn't eventually enter the NWI market.

Would Mariano's pose a competitive threat to Strack & Van Til?
