No one is saying that Hammond is a good place to live just that the train stop is generally safe. I am sure there are a number of posters on is forum who have taken the train from there for years without incident.

I doubt St Augustine is completely devoid of crime. Same can be said of Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast in Chicago, which are arguably some of the most desirable neighborhoods in the country. Senior citizens get violently robbed (even killed) from time to time in even the most affluent and generally safe neighborhoods.

I am not a fan of Hammond but to say that it is a complete hole is unfair. I am not a proponent of casinos and the crowds they attact but it is hard to deny they don't bring in the crowds.

I don't know what it is about the NWI forum that draws people in to comment on things they have no current knowledge about.

it's strange that people who lived here decades ago, once drove down 65 or stayed a week with their grandma in the summer when they were 6 feel the need to come here and feel like their opinion holds water.

Newsflash: it doesn't.

But most people are smart enough to take what those outsiders are saying with a big ol' grain of salt.

Oh, you mean the face that actually lives in the area?

Yeah, it's no big deal.

You know what else is not a big deal? Using the Hammond South Shore station.

Except, ya know. Fact.

Two ways to wind up in Hammond: The Train, or a series of bad life decisions.

Agreed.

I'm beginning to have a great appreciation for the Sunshine State for drawing the crazies away from here.

Why is someone who lives in the lovely city of St Augustine (where there was a stabbing today but whatever) so interested in what goes on in Hammond Indiana? Is the station a place where nothing bad ever happens to anyone? Of course not. Per your article, a guy pushed an old man and took his wallet a couple of weeks ago. That's a shame. But is it a generally safe place to go? I take the train there as I said, usually by myself. I'm a woman of average height, average weight, approaching 60. I feel comfortable there. My husband, friends, no one I know says anything about me going there. Are we all delusional? You're beating a dead horse.

Because I am very familiar with Hammond (thankfully, am not one of sad souls who are stuck living there) and cannot stand to see the liars and Pollyannas characterize the Hammond train station as being perfectly safe.

That is a lie, it is contra to my own personal experiences, it is contra to all quantifiable fact about the area and it is contra to A ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED THERE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO.

The state of Florida is the 3rd most populous state in the US. I live in 19 acres and have cows. My insurance is dirt cheap and I've never encountered corruption once (however I encountered it routinely in Illinois )

In your lame attempt to 'talk down' a place you completely don't understand- on the basis of your own home-team being criticized for its legitimate failings- you sound like a total moron.

Illinois and Indiana are places where people live because they must.
Nobody retires there.

Is that by choice or because no one will live around you or with you?
