I currently work in Chicago's south loop and I am seriously considering moving to Munster, dyer, or st john indiana. It seems like the Hammond train stop would be the station I drive to. Is this station safe? I'd be taking it during rush hour (8am returning home at 6-630pm).

Also, I'm single so I'm not looking to buy a house right now. Are there any decent apartment complexes in these cities? Or do they all have not so desirable residents?

Thanks all.

Im not sure on apartments though as my brother is a homeowner not a renter.
Thanks for the input. I come from a very rural area, so it feels much more like home than Illinois suburbs.

I've never had, nor heard of any bad experiences at the Hammond station. I feel fine when my wife goes there on her own for trips into the city.

Apartments might be a little tougher to come by, but the new Prairie Square complex in Highland has shown promise.

Thanks for the link! I've been looking in highland as well. It looks like there are a ton of places in merrillville but it is a bit far from the train. I would like to keep my commute under an hour.

It's safe to use. I wouldn't particularly advise walking around the neighborhood where the Hammond station is at when it's dark at night... but as long as you're just going from parking lot to platform or vice versa, there's no security issue, especially since there will be a lot of other people in the area since you're a rush hour rider.

It is perfectly safe, though you might consider other stations (particularly East Chicago) as the one in Hammond has pretty limited parking. Check nictd.com for more information.

I do want to just let you know that Munster, Dyer, and St. John (actually, pretty much everywhere in Lake County) is more suburban or urban fringe than rural. Once youth get around past Crown Point, then it starts to become more rural...but you will definitely be in a suburban area especially in Munster and northern Dyer as it is very busy in those areas.

Thank you, I appreciate the input. I don't need to necessarily be out in the sticks, but less hustle and bustle than the close Chicago burbs in IL. I'm okay with the "suburbia feel". Somewhere where I don't have to pay $20 to park my car at the grocery store.

Anything wrong with Griffith? Seems close to highland and the metra stations, but higher crime according to research.

Eh. Depends on the exact area, but I would stay away from northern and eastern Griffith.

I'm not sure if I would look too hard in Griffith.
