Default love it

Never heard of this town until we moved out of South Loop; friends out here suggested we try Munster. I admit I had a bias against NW Indiana, and now find that I love it! The people are so much friendlier than what we were used to in Chicago. Now, I am married with kids, so if you are single/young, you will not want to live here! It is definitely a bedroom community. Otherwise, although I have found I enjoy the whole NW Indiana, and am unfamiliar with the local reputations of communities, I love it in Munster and plan to stay here forever. It is a nice mix of upscale and middle. There is diversity, not as much as what we were used to but it is there. I have found people to be very nice. Admittedly, we do live in one of those "upscale" communities which seem to get blasted all the time, but still, I do not see where people are looking down on others. I have found some absolute snobs, there is no denying that, but not what I expected after hearing from others. Yes, there is alot of wealth in this town, much more than I expected, but there are affordable areas as well. The parks dept is out of this world in their offerings and we are letting our child enjoy that to the fullest. Our Illinois friends are always pleasantly surprised when they come out here and are also very impressed with some of these neighborhoods. It can be a little too much "Republican" for me, but I will live. People take care of their homes and from what I see, there is sort of a housing boom, with beautiful new homes going up in West Lakes. From an outsider's perspective (me), it is beautiful gem, and a pleasant surprise out here. Just ignore the snobbery if you find it. The schools have been fantastic and involve the parents/guardians as much as they can and are very welcoming.

Not formally yet. It has been rumored that Noodles & Company would open either in Munster or Highland but nothing mentioned as of yet. I know that Au Bon Pain is looking for franchisers to expand into the NWI market.
As soon as I find out information, I will update on here. But if anyone hears anything before i do, feel free to post!

Default Nice update

In the 2008 Comprehensive Plan, the town outlined several major areas to tackle that are currently being tackled (Munster Shops, Lake Business Center, etc.)......well, another area was the northwest side of Munster and cleaning up the area a little bit to encourage new development.

The town has just approved a major expenditure to acquire ALL of the housing (all of which are ranch duplexes) on the West side of Manor Avenue in between Ridge Road and Broadway. The town secured $800,000 for this in 2011 and will have another $1,250,000 to complete the task.

They state the area will be turned into green space (which is great) but this could also pave way for upscale brownstone homes for the area (which was talked about before).

That area of Munster is such an eyesore--looks like the "projects." I'm not sad to see it go.

As if this is big news. You should drive by the dump of a so called "headquarters" in Lansing right now. The real motive is to avoid paying a higher state corporate tax rate being headquartered Illinois. The company is family owned and employs 40 white collar level employees at its headquarters in lansing. Most of the white collar employees will probably be joining land o frost in the new Munster office. After all it is a family owned business and most of those 40 professional level employees are probably family or affiliated with the family. Hardly a boon for white collar jobs for the local community of munster.

Meat processing is a very manual labor intensive business that employs over 1,000 people in there meat packing facilities. Very few executive level jobs. And the company is family owned. So even fewer executive level jobs for the general public.

I mean it's a meat processing facility. As far as jobs. Lansing is next door to munster. It's not like they are going to lay off all of there longtime workers, and pay them unemployment. Just because they are moving the "headquarters" 2 whole miles down the road.

And the tax revenue will go to Indiana instead of Illinois.
